Ivan V was a Tsar of Russia who ruled jointly with his half-brother Peter the Great from 1682 until his death in 1696. Ivan V was born on August 27, 1666, in Moscow, Russia. He was the second son of Tsar Alexis and his second wife, Natalia Naryshkina. Ivan suffered from mental and physical disabilities, which left him incapable of ruling independently.
During Ivan's reign, the Russian state was governed by the Naryshkin family, Ivan's mother's relatives. Ivan V's reign was marked by political instability and was plagued by various uprisings, including the Moscovite Streltsy uprising of 1682, which resulted in the joint reign of Ivan V and Peter the Great.
Ivan V conspired with the Streltsy to overthrow Peter the Great, but his plans were betrayed to Peter, who responded by arresting Ivan and his collaborators. After this incident, Ivan was practically confined to his palace and was kept under close guard by Peter's loyal adherents.
Ivan V died on February 8, 1696, in Moscow, Russia, at the age of 29. Despite his mental and physical limitations, Ivan V played a vital role in the history of Russia, as his reign paved the way for the modernization and westernization of the country under the capable leadership of Peter the Great.
